Keeping numeracy on the agenda at the Education Committee enquiry

The House of Commons Education Committee is hosting a conference to look at the ‘Purpose and quality of education in England’ next week.

The inquiry launched last year with a call for written evidence. National Numeracy responded to argue that the purpose of school maths education is twofold a) to prepare all young people for life, further education and work in the broadest sense, and b) to prepare some young people for advanced STEM study/work.

While b) is moderately successful a) is not, with too many young people leaving school functionally innumerate and ill-equipped for life, further education/training and work.

The responses will be explored in more depth at the conference. National Numeracy will be there!
