Celebrate and Inspire for Volunteers’ Week

1 Jun 2023

By Laura Hill, Volunteering Manager

National Numeracy is excited to mark Volunteers’ Week, 1-7 June, 2023.

This year marks the 39th anniversary of Volunteers’ Week and National Numeracy is joining thousands of charities and voluntary organisations recognising the contribution volunteers make across the UK.

Volunteer taking part in classroom session

With this year’s theme of ‘Celebrate and Inspire’ we celebrate the volunteers from our corporate partners who are inspiring children to see the value of maths in the real world!

Since we started our Numeracy Volunteers programme in 2022, thanks to the kind support of Capital One, we have developed and piloted a Numeracy Volunteers training session and two primary school activities: a ‘My Maths Story’ assembly and a ‘Maths in the Real World’ class session.

So far we have trained 44 volunteers from our partners Capital One, Experian and Vanquis Banking Group.  Between them they have delivered 35 ‘My Maths Story’ assemblies and supported 22 ‘Maths in the Real World’ class sessions in 35 schools in Bradford, Nottingham, London, Skegness, Corby and Chesterfield.

Over 6,000 children have had the opportunity to discover the maths in life beyond school and make the connection between what they learn at school and the world of work.

Feedback from both volunteers and schools has been fantastic and we’re keen to expand the programme to more schools and volunteers in more areas of the UK.

What they say:

"I had the best time! Thank you so much for organising everything. The school were so welcoming, the assembly slides were so engaging, the lesson went so well! In fact, the children gasped and said 'wow!' multiple times during the video in the assembly, they loved it! Looking forward to helping on more volunteering days! It was the highlight of my week (if not month) for sure."

– Katherine Dobson, Finance Analyst at Capital One UK

“It was great! The children enjoyed hearing about the use of maths in everyday life and were full of questions to ask! The volunteer was energetic and passionate. The children absolutely loved it and it certainly got them thinking about maths beyond the classroom.”

– Grace Gladstone, Assistant Headteacher, St John and St James School, London

A huge thank you to all our volunteers for the time, energy and enthusiasm you have given to the programme.

Happy Volunteers’ Week!
