Stephanie’s team and how they’re preparing for the future

I’m a Team Leader in HM Revenue & Customs and manage a team of 10. Our office is due to close next year, so I’m really trying to support everyone in upskilling and preparing for the future, to make sure they’re in the best possible standing for the upcoming job search.

I received notification of the National Numeracy Challenge in an office newsletter and sent it on to my team, encouraging them all to take part. There was healthy competition amongst the team, and when I saw what fun they were having competing with each other and enthusing about it, I decided to have a go myself.

My first attempt was below the 80 mark, yet higher than I anticipated, and I surprised myself. I think we were actually all surprised with what we knew and it helped us identify where we needed to learn more. I then decided to take the Challenge again, having worked on my less strong areas, and this time I exceeded 80 and gained the Essentials of Numeracy. I was delighted!

I learned a lot about myself and how I could “do maths”; where I had weak areas, what I was good at, and the techniques I can use to solve problems.

It was such a great way to engage the team and learn new skills, so I went on to recommend the Challenge to the rest of the management team, and their teams!
