On the first day back at school after the Easter holidays Rhys visited a primary school in Tower Hamlets to deliver his My Maths Story assembly and support a Maths in the Real World class session.
The class teacher and Maths Lead, said: "The assembly went really well, both the volunteer and children were engaged and thoroughly enjoyed it. The session in the classroom was great, the children were motivated and they found it fun and exciting."
Delivering our My Maths Story assembly and supporting our Maths in the Real World class session allows our corporate volunteers to demonstrate and develop a wide range of skills. During the school year 2023/2024, 87% of our volunteers felt that through participating in the programme they were able to develop their presentation skills and 90% said they had developed their communication skills.*
Through our Numeracy Volunteer training and the support we provide, our volunteers feel well prepared to deliver our activities. 98% of volunteers said they felt a sense of achievement after taking part and 100% said they had fun and enjoyed themselves.*
Rhys said: "I think the assembly and slide structure was set up well and I enjoyed it a lot, I felt like it supported in my presentation skills and understanding how to work with different ages, understanding how to translate my work at a different level so more people understand."
Since 2019, AWS has provided vital digital infrastructure, security, and scalability, helping to enable over 620,000 people across the UK to improve their number confidence and skills through the National Numeracy Challenge, which is powered by their cloud technology. AWS also supports record participation in National Numeracy Day, which in 2024 alone inspired over 600,000 actions to improve numeracy. The Challenge is a key element of our campaigns, as we direct people to take part, improve their skills, and inspire number confidence. As a founding member of the National Numeracy Leadership Council, AWS helps drive systemic change and champions the importance of numeracy nationwide.
We are celebrating National Numeracy Day on Wednesday 21st May and have many volunteers from our corporate partners keen to visit schools that week and after half term in June. We are particularly looking for schools in Yorkshire, Manchester, Nottingham and London, although we have volunteers in many areas of the UK. See here for more information for schools interested in hosting a volunteer and here for more information about taking part in the programme through partnering with National Numeracy.
