This year’s National Numeracy Day saw people across the UK take part in Big Number Natters – informal chats about numbers and maths to help people open up the conversation around the subject and how they feel about it, whether they love it or loathe it!
To celebrate the campaign, National Numeracy CEO Sam Sims had a Big Number Natter with Lord Agnew, Chair of the House of Lords Numeracy for Life committee inquiry (you can watch the video below).
Understanding numbers can have an empowering impact on your life
Sam asked Lord Agnew what one word he would use to describe his feelings about numbers, to which he replied: “Empowering, because it allows you to live your life if you understand the numbers that are impacting it.”
Lord Agnew went on to explain how being able to understand numbers is essential as it helps him make decisions when dealing with the chain of schools and academy trusts he set up.
He added that he hopes the year-long inquiry will help people understand the extent of the problem in the lack of confidence that adults in particular have with numbers and also to try to put together a package of practical solutions to offer to the government.
Why not have your own Big Number Natter with a friend, relative or colleague?
Anyone can have a Big Number Natter – you may even be surprised to discover that family and friends feel the same way as you about numbers.
