National Numeracy Ambassador, maths teacher and TV presenter Bobby has been appointed a Member of the Order of the British Empire (MBE) for services to public libraries.

Along with his passion for helping people build their confidence with everyday numeracy, Bobby has been a long-term advocate for libraries and the benefits they can bring.

A lifelong love of libraries

Bobby, 41, told the BBC: “Growing up, my dad used to take me and my younger brothers to East Ham Library every Saturday and we’d read all sorts of books on Aztecs, Victorian engineering, the fiction of Tolkien and week after week, month after month, year after year they gave me the knowledge and skills to be the person I am today.

“Even now as an adult I still go to my library most weeks and I see people – elderly people there, younger people, parents with children, teenagers having study groups, and libraries are such important parts of our communities.

“I do a lot of work on social media campaigning with CILIP the professional body, and The Reading Agency, trying to show why libraries are so important to society and community.”

The invaluable impact of promoting number confidence

Sam Sims, CEO of National Numeracy said: “We are thrilled to congratulate Bobby Seagull on the appointment of his MBE, a well-deserved honour for his tireless support for the important work of public libraries.

“At National Numeracy we know all about the invaluable impact of Bobby’s work – as one of our amazing Ambassadors he has helped promote improved number confidence for adults and children across the UK since 2017.

“We wish Bobby all the best and join him in celebrating this prestigious honour.”

Congratulations, Bobby – you deserve it!
