Number Confidence Week 6-10 November 2023

Number Confidence Week is the only UK campaign that focuses on how people feel about using numbers.

Now in its fourth year, the campaign aims to empower people to take the first step to build their number confidence.

Improving numeracy skills can bring many benefits, from managing money, getting on at work and supporting children with homework.

Being 'number confident' means being confident enough to use the maths skills we need in everyday situations.

Number Confidence Week 2023 is supported by Founding Supporter TP ICAP as well as Lead Supporters Barclays LifeSkills, Capital One, Experian, the Lord Mayor’s Appeal and Vanquis Banking Group.

Meanwhile, National Numeracy ambassadors Timi ‘Mr MoneyJar’ Merriman-Johnson, Iona Bain, Harry Baker, Bobby Seagull, Peter Sawkins, Katya Jones and Martin Lewis will be supporting the campaign and helping us to spread the word about building confidence with numbers.

Sam Sims, Chief Executive of National Numeracy said: "Number confidence can open the door to many opportunities in life and with the ongoing cost-of-living crisis it’s vital for the nation to feel comfortable and confident with the maths we all need in our everyday lives.

"Being confident with numbers can help us feel more in control of our finances, better equipped to get into or on at work and more able to support the numeracy of the children in our care.

"At National Numeracy, we are increasingly focused on supporting those with the lowest numeracy in areas of greatest need, where numeracy is an integral piece of the puzzle for social mobility.

"Our research shows that getting on with numbers can drive productivity and prosperity and is within everyone’s reach."

“Whether it is managing your personal finances, feeling equipped to help your children with their maths homework or applying for a new job, low number confidence can make these seemingly everyday tasks seem daunting. We want to change that perception, which is why we are the proud founding partner of Number Confidence Week. TP ICAP is particularly focused on helping people from all backgrounds build their number confidence levels so that they feel empowered to pursue employment opportunities in the financial services sector. This helps both advance social mobility and enable our industry to hire a more diverse range of talent, which is critical to the future success of our industry and the wider UK economy.”

Lead Supporters

Numeracy is critical in preparing people for work. With low numeracy confidence and maths anxiety disproportionately impacting young people from disadvantaged backgrounds, the need for support is more urgent than ever. Barclays LifeSkills is thrilled to be supporting Number Confidence Week for the first time this year, and working with the charity to help people build vital confidence with numbers.”

Capital One UK is really proud to be supporting Number Confidence Week as part of our wider partnership with National Numeracy. During these times of uncertainty, we recognise the difference having confidence with numbers has when it comes to finances and money management, as well as the impact it can have on skills for everyday life.”

In these challenging times it is more important than ever for people to take action to increase their number skills, especially given the connection between numeracy and financial health. A barrier for many is their lack of confidence around numbers; and so we are proud to be working with National Numeracy, its supporters and ambassadors to help deliver another highly impactful Number Confidence Week.”

"At The Lord Mayor’s Appeal we are committed to creating ‘A Better City for All’, one that is inclusive, healthy, skilled and fair. Now in its third year, our charity partnership with National Numeracy helps Londoners fulfil their potential and prevent low numeracy from holding them back. Our ‘Every Londoner Counts’ initiative continues to improve employability and financial inclusion by supporting those in need to build confidence, skills and positive attitudes to numeracy through a network of Numeracy Champions. We are thrilled to support Number Confidence Week."

"We’re so proud to be named as a Lead Supporter for Number Confidence Week, as a long-time supporter of National Numeracy. Having confidence with numbers can make such a difference. Low confidence can result in anxiety in everyday tasks such as shopping, submitting gas meter readings, getting to appointments on time, and managing finances…so anything we can do as a business to help grow awareness and grow people’s confidence will likely help them in so many more areas of their lives."
