Emily visited St Patrick’s Primary and Nursery School in Newry this month, delivering a highly engaging My Maths Story assembly and supporting a Maths in the Real World class session.
In the assembly, Emily spoke to the children about all the ways in which she uses maths in her every day, coming up with some really unique and creative examples to showcase just how important maths is in everyday life. She explained to the children how she uses maths when gardening, to measure flowerbeds and sow seeds. She also showcased her amazing baking skills, explaining how maths is used in doubling recipes and choosing good value ingredients! These unique examples of using numbers in everyday life are such a great way to engage the children’s interest and help them see the value of maths outside of school, and Emily did an amazing job of explaining this!
Eamonn McClorey, Teacher at St Patrick's Primary & Nursery School said:
"The assembly went well. Emily kept the pace brisk and the children were engaged throughout."
Our volunteer, Emily said:
"This was my second time volunteering with the National Numeracy scheme, and I’ve been really impressed both times. National Numeracy is very well-organised and provides plenty of training and support on delivering the materials. I’ve also enjoyed meeting staff and pupils in both schools - the kids have all been really engaged. I would definitely recommend volunteering to others."
TP ICAP has been a valued strategic partner of National Numeracy since 2018, sharing our commitment to improving social mobility by helping people build confidence with numbers.
