How to help all children do better at maths: primary and early years report from Fair Education Alliance

tube station mind the gap education attainment gapA report from the Fair Education Alliance – of which National Numeracy is a member – identifies what primary schools and early years settings can do to help improve the numeracy of children from the least privileged backgrounds.

The report examines successful practice in reducing the attainment gap between richer and poorer children in 10 primary schools and 10 early years settings and makes a number of recommendations.

These include a national professional development programme to support early years staff in developing children’s numeracy and stronger parental engagement in children’s maths learning.

The report also stresses the importance of a whole-school approach to maths and of changing negative attitudes among staff, parents and children.
