Government to drop forced GCSE resits

dominoesNational Numeracy welcomes suggestions that the government is about to abandon the policy of forcing some students to resit GCSEs, allowing them instead to study for a functional skills qualification.

The pass rate for maths GCSE re-sits has been shockingly low and the process demoralising for too many students whose real need is to master the essentials of numeracy, rather than take an exam too far removed from the practicalities of life and work.

We now also look forward to the results of the current review of functional skills to make them an even better qualification.
