National Numeracy is proud to receive a grant from the Welsh government, to further support numeracy across the nation.

Part of the Curriculum for Wales grant support programme, the award will enable National Numeracy to help build number-confident school communities and establish lasting approaches and strategies that will continue in schools beyond the end of the funding in March 2028.

Each school will be supported for two years and during that time the programme will help both school pupils as well as the adults who support them.
Encouraging a maths-positive attitude among adults as well as children
At National Numeracy we know that amongst the strongest factors affecting the attitudes of children to numeracy are the adults that support them at home and at school. Number-confident adults are the most powerful lever towards a more number confident next generation.
Therefore, the programme will take an interactive approach in order to truly engage its beneficiaries, with school staff receiving CPD-accredited Numeracy Champions training.
Numeracy Champions are volunteers who support and guide others within their communities to improve their number confidence.
School staff will also have access to the two-hour session, Feeling Better About Maths. The interactive, online session focuses on improving adults’ confidence and attitudes towards maths.
Demonstrating the value of maths in the real world
In addition, depending on availability, there is potential for schools to be visited by corporate volunteers (funded separately by corporate partners) to deliver My Maths Story assemblies and Maths in the Real World class sessions, demonstrating to pupils the value of maths in everyday life.
Schools will also take part in our exciting, nationwide campaigns, National Numeracy Day and Number Confidence Week, and there will be access to expert-led webinars on topics such as maths anxiety, dyscalculia and financial education.
Lynne Neagle, Cabinet Secretary for Education, said of the Curriculum for Wales grant support programme:
“This is a huge investment in high-quality, nationally consistent support for all our schools. I am making sure that teaching professionals across Wales can access the expertise, advice and professional learning they need.
“All parts of Wales will have access to expertise to provide joined up maths education between both primary and secondary school; giving all schools access to professional learning and resources and support to help schools boost confidence of parents, carers and staff.”
Beth Barnes, National Numeracy’s Schools and Families Programme Manager, said:
"We’re absolutely thrilled to bring our Schools and Families programme to even more communities across Wales. This grant is a fantastic opportunity to support children and their families to build greater confidence with numbers together – helping to lay the foundations for brighter futures."
