Volunteer of the Month: January 2026

21 Jan 2026

By Laura Hill, Volunteering Manager

2026 has got off to a great start for our corporate volunteer programme with 26 new volunteers trained and many more looking forward to volunteering with us again in the school Spring term.

As the new year gets underway our corporate volunteers are looking forward to visiting schools across the UK to deliver their 'My Maths Story' assemblies and support our 'Maths in the Real World' classroom sessions.

Leigh Godfrey delivering an assembly

Congratulations to Leigh Godfrey, Group Commercial Finance Director at Barratt Redrow, who we are recognising as our first Volunteer of the Month in 2026!

Leigh visited one of our priority Schools and Families Programme schools, Moira Primary School in Leicestershire, to present his 'My Maths Story' assembly and support two 'Maths in the Real World' class sessions.

Leigh said, "I thought the assembly was positive and the children really well behaved, they engaged with some good questions throughout the presentation. The class session was good too, a good opportunity for the children to talk about what they heard in the assembly. I felt like I was able to give something back to a local school and that feels like a good use of my time. I am hoping the children will have taken something from the session and provoked some thought on how they use maths in many aspects of life... also how they might use it in a job in the future."

Annie Lindsay, Year 6 teacher and Maths Lead at Moira Primary School, said, "Leigh was great with the children, and they were interested in what he had to share - he made maths very relatable and it was great to have an aspirational figure like him come to our school. The assembly was great - a good amount of time for the children to sit. A mix of video, pictures, talking etc. The classroom session worked well with the resources provided. The children were engaged and it was a great session supported by our volunteer."

We’re proud to partner with the Barratt Redrow Foundation, whose support is helping us reach families and communities where confidence with numbers can make a real difference. Through their funding and the commitment of their volunteers, we’re expanding National Numeracy’s Schools and Families Programme, supporting children, parents and carers to build the confidence and practical skills they need to use maths in everyday life.

Well done to Leigh and thank you to all our volunteers – we’re looking forward to many brilliant assemblies and class sessions this year.
