Ursula and Vinod volunteered at a primary school in Tower Hamlets, London, delivering a joint My Maths Story assembly and supported a Maths in the Real-World classroom session. They spoke to the pupils about all the interesting ways they use maths in their everyday life.
Ursula amazed the children with her juggling skills, explaining how maths is needed to understand the rhythm when juggling and how the balls move. Vinod also impressed the children when he told them that he enjoys karting and explained how fundamental numeracy is for this hobby. Whilst supporting the Maths in the Real-World classroom session in a Year 5 and Year 6 class, they continued to use their unique and wonderful examples to help the pupils see the link between maths and everyday life.
A teacher from the school said: “The children really enjoyed the characters and thinking about maths in their jobs and hobbies- it was well-pitched.”
Our volunteers said:
“It was just nice that the kids seemed to enjoy it and were getting involved. I was happy that they were thinking of novel ideas for the case studies, and I hope it gives them an appreciation of how maths can be used out of and after school.”
“The pupils were very engaged and asked thoughtful questions. They loved my juggling demonstration for illustrating patterns, geometry, counting, rhythm and probability. The tag-team presentation with my colleague went well. The genuine engagement of the pupils and teachers made it seem like we'd made a difference.”
