National Numeracy joined CBeebies for their summer event the Big Day Out with The Furchester Hotel last month. The five day event was held in Weston-super-Mare and attracted 42,000 visitors.
The event focussed on learning about food and cooking, and National Numeracy provided all sorts of fun maths-related activities to help children learn the concepts of weights and measures. Number aerobics, weights and measures, taller and shorter than and our number lines all went down a storm with children, their families, teachers and childminders alike.
Over 100 children took part in our workshops, where children followed a recipe to make their own Play-Doh and fruit salad bags shaped by a butterfly with the support of National Numeracy staff and volunteers. As a group, the children counted out the pieces of fruit together and placed them into small bags, which were assembled and decorated to look like a butterfly.
Want to have a go at running the fruit salad butterfly activity? Let us know and we will send you the recipe. Meanwhile take a look at the National Numeracy Parent Toolkit for ideas and activities to keep your kids under 13 busy with fun maths activities over the summer.
