National Numeracy Day is back on 20 May, and this year we’re bringing people together across schools, workplaces and neighbourhoods with our brand-new theme, ‘Count on Your Community’. We’re celebrating how we all use numbers to support each other in everyday life.
Family Maths Toolkit activities
We’ve translated a selection of our Family Maths Toolkit activities, which have been tailored to shine a spotlight on maths in our communities. These short, fun maths activities can be used by schools or families. They help schools engage parents and carers with children’s maths learning – and they help parents and carers boost their children’s confidence with numbers. Families don’t need any special maths knowledge or equipment to enjoy the Family Maths activities. Children can draw pictures, write calculations, take photos or create diagrams in their answers. Creativity is encouraged!
There are activities for all year groups from ages 4-11.
The Number Heroes drawing competition
Our Number Heroes drawing competition is back! And this year we’re asking children the question: How do people use numbers in your neighbourhood, club or community? Maybe they want to draw a shopkeeper or paramedic, talk about using bus timetables, or save up their pocket money for some new football boots. We want to see and hear all about the places they’ve spotted numbers in everyday life around them.
There are six prize bundles worth £1,000+ for schools up for grabs, as well as vouchers for the individual winners and runners-up.
The Big Number Natter
At the heart of National Numeracy Day is the Big Number Natter, a nationwide invitation to connect with others and share how we really feel about numbers. Building number confidence starts with having open conversations in our communities.
How you take part is up to you: Number Natters can be five minutes or thirty, in big groups or just around the kitchen table. They can be held in schools with students or teachers, as well as in organisations with colleagues and teammates. The aim is simply to get people, of all ages, talking about numbers in a way that feels open, supportive and human.
We've created a suite of ready-to-use resources to make getting involved easy, including simple guides for planning sessions, posters to let everyone know what you’re doing, and talking points to get your conversations started.
So, what are you waiting for?
